SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Walk from Ponte de Lima to Rubiães
Distance: 18 km (11,2 miles)
Elevation (gain/loss):
Meet in the beautiful medieval town of Ponte de Lima, the starting point for your one day on the Portuguese Way to Santiago.
Leave the historic town by crossing the impressive Romanesque-Gothic bridge over the River Lima with its 22 arches. After reaching the far side of the bridge, a right turn will plunge you into the rural world of the farming parish of Arcozelo.
After Labruja, agriculture becomes scarce and is replaced by forests as you climb to Portela Pequena. These two uphill kilometres from Labruja are the most demanding of the whole Way, but the views from the top are indeed rewarding.
Halfway up, we find the Cruz dos Franceses and climb to the forestry commission house at the summit. Views like these deserve to be appreciated, and you will certainly have earned a rest. A picnic lunch of tasty local produce will be waiting for you to replenish your energy.
From the top of the hill, it is an easy journey downhill through woodland, passing an old watermill before arriving in Rubiães. End the walk at the magnificent Romanesque church surrounded by curious gravestones and Roman engravings.
Now, all that remains is for us to take you back to Ponte de Lima by car.
