Peneda-Geres National Park and Douro Valley Highlights

1-week guided tour combining country hikes with cultural walking tours and places of gastronomic and historical wonder

Explore the highlights of Portuguese gastronomy, landscapes and culture on this varied and fascinating active holiday in northern Portugal. Walk through green valleys and oak forests along ancient mountain trails in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, visit historical cities and villages and discover the stunning vineyards and architecture in the Douro Valley.

Balance easy country hikes with cultural walking tours and guided visits to places of gastronomic and historical importance to fully appreciate the history, landscape and traditions of this region. You’ll also have time to simply relax amid stunning countryside.

Indulge in the best of northern Portugal’s wines and cuisine in traditional restaurants, wine estates, vineyard picnics and gourmet establishments.

Day 1 – Welcome to the rural beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park

Your private driver will meet you at Porto airport and take you to the eastern part of Peneda Geres National Park.

You’ll be warmly welcomed at a renovated rural cottage in a small complex of former farm buildings in the Montalegre district, where you’ll be staying for the first 3 nights.

Once you have settled in, take a stroll around the grounds to admire the views and traditional stone architecture. Depending on the weather, you could have a refreshing dip in the pool or curl up in front of the log fire with a glass of wine or port while your dinner is being carefully prepared for your first gastronomic experience.

Day 2 – Driving tour of Peneda-Geres National Park

After a satisfying breakfast, embark on a one-day guided driving tour through wolf territory where you will discover old villages and castles, wolf traps, local traditions, waterfalls, oak forests, wild horses and the other delights the national park has in store.

After an exciting day, return to your cosy accommodation to relax before a delicious dinner of meat, fresh vegetables, smoked meats, and tasty local bread, all typical of the Tras-os-Montes region.

Day 3 – Explore Peneda Geres villages and countryside on foot

Today, we recommend setting off from your country house for a fantastic self-guided walking tour of the local area.

This easy 19 km circular trail passes through many interesting places like old pastoral paths and the paths that lead to the villages. This is an opportunity to be in contact with the local culture and the daily life of the villages.

When you get back to your lodgings, simply relax and then head to a traditional local restaurant for a tasty and well-earned evening meal.

Day 4 – Sparkling water, a grand manor house and a Douro wine estate

After checking out your private driver will take you to visit the Pedras Salgadas water-bottling factory. Carbonated with natural gas, this highly-regarded sparkling mineral water comes from the springs at Pedras Salgadas.

Lunch at Cais da Villa Restaurant in Vila Real.

After lunch, explore the famous 18th century Baroque style Mateus Palace on a guided tour of the winery, gardens and grand family home.

After the tour, your driver will take you to the Douro Valley. You’ll be staying in a delightful wine hotel near Peso da Régua where you can spend the afternoon exploring the estate and wine-producing facilities or simply relaxing surrounded by gorgeous scenery.

This evening, enjoy fine regional gastronomy with a paired tasting menu at your hotel or one of our favourite restaurants.

Day 5 – Vineyard walk, wine tastings and cellar tour

After a sumptuous breakfast your chauffeur will take you to Valença do Douro to start a 6km easy guided walking trail through the vineyards and stunning landscapes.

As you walk, you’ll learn about the terroir and techniques used to cultivate the vines that contribute to fine port wines and table wines. These terraced vineyards have created a cultural landscape of extraordinary beauty, now classified as UNESCO World Heritage.

Enjoy a well-earned traditional lunch at a stunning wine estate with views across the vineyards; some of its vines are over 100 years old. It may be old but this estate uses advanced technology to produce top quality wines which you’ll discover as you tour the cellars and do a wine tasting.

After admiring the hand painted azulejos of Pinhão’s train station, visit one of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards where you’ll have the opportunity to tour the cellars and taste their port wine.

You’ll then head back to your hotel to relax before dinner.

Day 6 – Walk through vineyards and villages, gourmet picnic and boat trip

This morning’s drive takes you along the N222, voted the World’s Best Driving Road in 2015 due to the glorious undulating scenery around the River Douro.

When you arrive at the wine-producing village of Ervadosa do Douro, it’s time to start the Vineyards Route walking tour.

Walk through an amphitheatre of vine terraces with the River Douro as your backdrop. You’ll encounter several villages with breathtaking views over the river and their curved slopes of terraced vineyards.

Replenish your energy by tucking into a gourmet picnic at a hillside quinta, another port wine producer.

Now you can relax as you cruise to the riverside village of Pinhão on a traditional Rabelo boat, formerly used to transport barrels of port wine to the cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia.

After the boat trip, it’s time to leave the Douro behind and head back to Porto in preparation for another day of new experiences.

Tonight’s comfortable accommodation is a 4-star hotel in Porto. You can dine onsite or allow us to book a restaurant we know you’ll love, according to your preferences.

Day 7 – Guided tour of Porto and free time

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, Porto is a place of extraordinary visual and architectural beauty. During the 3-hour tour, our experienced guide will help you discover its highlights and surrender to the charms of the old city, where the ancient streets are filled with attractive shops, lively cafés and colourful markets.

Have lunch in a typical fish restaurant in the fishing village of Afurada where you can watch the catch of the day being grilled in the street.

The afternoon is free for you to explore Porto as you wish or by following our suggestions.

We recommend ending the afternoon at Cálem wine cellars where you can combine two of Portugal’s greatest cultural icons, port wine and fado music. Tour the cellars and learn about age-old port wine making traditions then lose yourself in the melodies and emotion of a fado performance while you taste two of Cálem’s port wines.

Tell us your preferences and we will make arrangements for a truly memorable last dinner.
