Your expert guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to Clérigos church, the starting point for today’s discoveries on your Porto walking tour.
Climb the tower of the Baroque Clérigos church for a birds-eye view of the city. Pass the lion fountain on your way to Lello, one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores.
Walk down the expansive Avenida dos Aliados, presided over by Porto’s city hall. Stop to admire Jorge Colaço’s hand painted azulejos portraying the history of Portugal at São Bento railway station.
Witness the recent urban rehabilitation of the historical centre as you walk down Rua das Flores. Absorb the character of the city and its people as you stroll through the Ribeira district near the River Douro.
Walk across the D. Luís I bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel, to the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. You’ll tour the one of the wine cellars, established in 1790, and taste different varieties of port wine.
Enjoy lunch on this side of the River Douro to fully appreciate the views across the river to the historical centre of Porto. Try the modern DeCastro Gaia restaurant, which serves top-notch Portuguese cuisine as well as fine wines and port.
After lunch, ride the cable car up to Jardim do Morro before visiting Serra do Pilar, a monastery with an unusual circular church and cloisters. Climb to the cupola where the view over the city of Porto and its bridges is breathtaking.
Walk back into Porto across the top level of the D. Luís I bridge, keeping a watchful eye out for the metro as you take in the magnificent views up and down the River Douro.
Call into the 12th century Romanesque cathedral and peer down from the belvedere to see the higgledy piggledy medieval streets leading down to Ribeira. Now head slightly uphill to Praça da Batalha to visit the azulejo-clad church of Saint Idelfonso.
You’ll have earned another rest by now so what better place to stop for refreshments than the Belle Époque Café Majestic. You’re now in one of Porto’s major shopping streets, Rua Santa Catarina. Visit the traditional market at Bolhão then walk past other age-old shops before ending the tour in Avenida da Liberdade.
Your guide will take you back to your hotel by car where you will have free time to relax before dinner. We recommend Ode Porto Wine House for a delightful gastronomic experience. This small, cosy restaurant values fresh, organic materials, slow food and the personal touch.
