Explore Peneda-Gerês National Park
8 days | from 870€
1 week self-guided walking holiday amid the magnificent mountain scenery and rural communities of Portugal's Peneda-Gerês National Park.
The “Sarilhão” Eagle’s Trail is located in a parish called Campo do Gerês, which is rich in cultural heritage and traditions as well as stunning scenery.
You will walk along slopes, plains and the wide Rodas River valley between the Ethnographic Museum and the left bank of Vilarinho das Furnas lake, with gorgeous views throughout. As you traverse the narrow lanes of the ancient villages, you’ll notice traditional features such as stone grain stores and wooden balconies.
Following the Geira Roman road, Via Nova XVIII, you will see the engraved milestone markers. Near the XXIX milestone there are traces of the shelter in which the Portuguese population defended themselves against hostile invasions during the Middle Ages.
Local wildlife includes the white kite, red-chested bullfinch and the Bocage lizard. Oak, pine, chestnut and strawberry trees predominate although there are many plant varieties here.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the local history and nature of this part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park in the museums of Campo do Gerês.
The Geira Museum is all about the Roman Antonine Itinerary XVIII, an important Roman military road that connected Bracara Augusta (now the city of Braga) in Portugal to Asturica Augusta (now Astorga) in Spain via a 215-mile route.
Learn about the people and customs of the village that was submerged in the creation of the reservoir at the Vilarinho das Furnas Ethnographic Museum.
Campo Gerês Park Gate contains plenty of information about the nature and traditions of this area.
9:45 am – Meet your guide in Campo do Gerês at the Gate of Peneda-Gerês National Park for a briefing before setting off
