Thinking About a Cycling Holiday? Discover Whether an E-bike or Traditional Bike is the Best Choice for Your Portuguese Adventure
Why an e-bike could be the perfect fit for your cycling holiday in Portugal
Once Cycling is a great way to explore the Portuguese countryside. But if you’re not a regular cyclist, or if you want to tackle a more demanding route, you may welcome the added boost of an e-bike. Choosing an e-bike for your cycling holiday can change your experience. It will allow you to cycle for longer and climb challenging hills with ease.
E-bikes are included as standard on some of our cycling holidays, while on others, you can choose them as an optional upgrade. So, if you’re curious to find out how e-bikes compare to traditional bikes, read on for the key differences and discover which will best suit your next adventure.
An e-bike allows you to enjoy the scenery
Northern Portugal has breathtaking scenery, and an e-bike allows you to soak it all in without pedalling flat out. Designed for comfort, an e-bike will keep you in a more relaxed, upright position, so you can enjoy the views as you ride.
With the help of the battery, you can cycle for longer without feeling tired. And, because you’re not hunched over concentrating on pedalling, you’ll get to see more of the stunning landscape along the way.
Cyclists with different fitness levels can ride together
An e-bike makes it easier for people of all fitness levels to enjoy a cycling holiday in Portugal. It levels the playing field, allowing those who don’t cycle regularly to keep up with more experienced riders. It’s perfect if you’re traveling with a partner who cycles often while you don’t.
On tours where e-bikes aren’t included by default, you can choose an upgrade to even the odds. E-bikes are also a great option if you’re recovering from an injury, getting back in shape, or have creaky joints.
You’ll still get a workout
An e-bike isn’t like riding a motorbike, you still need to pedal to get it moving and use the gears just like on a standard bike. The motor simply makes pedalling easier, but you control the speed with your own effort.
The power settings mean you can get as much or as little assistance as you want. You could even turn the motor off completely and ride it like a regular bike – although remember it will be much heavier! You’re still exercising while riding an e-bike, so preparing for your cycling holiday is a good idea.
You can pick your own level of assistance
You can choose from four levels of assistance on our e-bikes, depending on how much effort you want to put in. The Eco mode is ideal when you’re feeling strong and fresh. The Tour setting works well for rolling terrain, while Sport is best for tackling steeper climbs or at the end of a long day.
To get boost on challenging hills, switch to Turbo mode. However, keep in mind that a lower power assistance while using the bike’s gears is often more efficient, helping conserve the battery.
E-bikes are heavier than standard bikes
The battery and motor add weight to an e-bike, making it more challenging to push or lift. This extra weight is less noticeable while pedalling due to the e-power. E-bike assistance isn’t needed for downhill riding and can even slow you down, so it’s a good time to conserve battery power.
We provide a charging kit with our e-bikes so you can start each day with a full battery. Our routes are designed to leave you with at least 25% battery by the end of the day. If the battery does run out, pedalling will become more difficult so it’s important to keep an eye on your battery level throughout the day.
Relax and explore Northern Portugal on an e-bike cycling holiday
An e-bike cycling holiday lets you end each day with more energy to enjoy your evenings. The hill boost will help you explore more challenging terrain and cover longer distances at a relaxed pace.
You can soak up views, delve into history, and enjoy local food and wine without stressing about daily mileage or ascent. Regular cyclists can ride for longer, while those less experienced can handle longer routes and steeper hills with confidence.
Some our trips are specific e-bike tours, like the Douro Valley e-bike cycling trip. This takes you through spectacular scenery with terraced vineyards and traditional villages away from the tourist hotspots.
You can also opt to add an e-bike to our other cycling holidays as an optional upgrade.
