Fascinating Facts You Won’t Want to Miss

This region is a true Portuguese gem, and it’s full of curious stories:

• Did you know that Port wine was once transported from here by rabelo boats? Long before gaining worldwide fame, the wine was shipped down the Douro River in these traditional flat-bottomed vessels, guided by long rudder oars called espadelas.Built without a keel and with overlapping wooden boards, they could carry up to 100 barrels of wine. Manned by a crew of six or seven, these boats were perfectly suited to the river’s shallow waters. Today, you can still see them – now used for scenic river cruises that offer a connection to the region’s rich traditions.
• Another must-see is the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas. Construction began in 1155, shortly after the land was gifted to the Order by Egas Moniz, tutor to Portugal’s first king. It became one of the most influential monastic centres of the Middle Ages, and its collection includes works by some of Portugal’s greatest painters.Despite renovations between the 16th and 18th centuries, you can still spot parts of the original Romanesque structure – such as one of the apsidal chapels, with its decorative capitals still intact.In Ucanha, there’s a unique fortified medieval bridge – the only one of its kind in Portugal. Its imposing tower once served defensive purposes, and in the 16th century, a toll was charged to cross it.
