Implementation of the ETIAS – EES systems

Implementation of the ETIAS – EES systems

The European Union is implementing two new digital systems that will transform the way third-country nationals enter and move within the Schengen Area: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) and EES (Entry/Exit System).

These systems are part of a broader EU strategy to modernise external border controls, strengthen security and improve the management of traveller flows, while maintaining mobility and a more efficient travel experience.

In this article, we explain what ETIAS and EES are, how they work and, in practical terms, what will change for those travelling to Europe.

1. What is ETIAS?

We begin with ETIAS – the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. This is not a visa, but rather a mandatory electronic travel authorisation for citizens of countries that currently do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area.

The aim of ETIAS is to allow European authorities to assess potential risks associated with travellers before they arrive at the EU’s external borders.

1.1 Main objectives of ETIAS

This electronic travel authorisation has the following main objectives:

  • Strengthen the internal security of the European Union
  • Prevent irregular migration
  • Improve health and security screening
  • Facilitate entry for legitimate travellers

1.2 How does ETIAS work?

To obtain ETIAS, travellers will need to follow these steps:

  • If required, submit an online application before travelling
  • Provide personal details, passport information and answer security questions
  • The system automatically cross-checks the data against multiple European and international databases
  • In most cases, authorisation is granted within minutes

This is a simple process, with the main advantage being that ETIAS will be valid for several years (or until passport expiry) and will allow multiple short-term entries into the Schengen Area.

2. What is EES (Entry/Exit System)?

The EES – Entry/Exit System is another key development discussed in this article. It is an automated system that electronically records the entry and exit of third-country nationals into and out of the Schengen Area, replacing the traditional manual passport stamping.

2.1 What will the EES record?

This automated registration system will collect the following data:

  • Traveller’s personal information
  • Dates and places of entry and exit
  • Biometric data (facial image and fingerprints)
  • Any refusals of entry

2.2 Main objectives of the EES

The EES has the following main objectives:

  • More effective control of authorised length of stay
  • Detection of overstays
  • Reduction of identity fraud
  • A more modern and accurate border control system

This innovation aims to monitor third-country visitors within the Schengen Area, ensuring greater security and control over entries and exits.

3. How do ETIAS and EES complement each other?

Although distinct systems with different functions, ETIAS and EES work together towards a single goal:

  • ETIAS operates before travel, as a pre-authorisation
  • EES operates at entry and exit, automatically recording border crossings

Together, they enable a more integrated and efficient approach to managing the EU’s external borders.

4. Who needs ETIAS and EES?

Citizens of visa-exempt countries
ETIAS will be mandatory for citizens of countries that currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa, such as:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Brazil
  • Japan, among others

Citizens who require a visa
Travellers who already require a Schengen visa will continue to follow existing procedures. ETIAS does not replace a visa and applies only to visa-exempt travellers.

EES, however, applies to all third-country nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays.

5. When will ETIAS and EES be implemented?

The rollout of ETIAS and EES is being carried out in phases by the European Union. Although the systems are technically ready, their launch depends on operational testing, border infrastructure upgrades and coordination between Member States.

Final dates may change, making it essential to follow official EU sources for the most up-to-date information, like this one.

6. What impact is expected?

Before travelling

  • Visa-exempt travellers will need to apply for ETIAS in advance
  • Applications should be submitted several days before departure
  • A small fee will apply

At border control

  • Fewer manual procedures due to automation
  • Biometric registration at first entry
  • Greater accuracy in border checks

Although this adds an extra administrative step, the goal is to make travel safer and more efficient in the medium and long term.

7. Main advantages and disadvantages

Like any new system, ETIAS and EES bring both benefits and challenges.

7.1 Advantages

  • Increased security for citizens and visitors
  • More effective external border control
  • Reduction in fraud and illegal overstays
  • Further modernisation of European systems

7.2 Disadvantages

  • Additional costs for travellers
  • Concerns regarding privacy and data protection
  • Possible difficulties during the initial adaptation phase

Despite these concerns, the European Union guarantees that all collected data will comply with strict data protection regulations.

The implementation of ETIAS and EES represents a significant shift in how Europe manages its external borders. These systems reflect a balance between security, mobility and technological innovation in an increasingly global travel environment.
