Highlights of Northern Portugal

We’ve selected our favourite experiences from some of our other tours in three very different parts of Northern Portugal, namely the UNESCO World Heritage wine region of the Douro Valley, the mountains and valleys of Peneda-Gerês National Park and the pristine coastline of the Minho area, to give you an intoxicating taste of this diverse region.

Your Northern Portugal adventure begins with a journey into the heart of the Douro for two days of hiking with stunning views and plenty of opportunities to taste world-class wines and local produce.

Next, you’re off to the wilder, rugged landscapes and isolated villages of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a certified World Biosphere Reserve. Discover an ancient castle, a remote sanctuary, delightful forests, crystal clear waters and hearty local fare.

After the mountains, you’ll head to the historical town of Vila Nova de Cerveira to walk beside the Minho River and the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll encounter fishing communities and gorgeous beaches on the way to the charming riverside city of Viana do Castelo.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

At Portugal Green Walks, we firmly believe that travel should be a safe and rewarding experience for all concerned, including the destinations you visit and the people you meet.

Please find out how we embrace sustainable and responsible travel.

Environment

  • Low-impact by design: two-night stays reduce transfers and laundry; therefore, your footprint is smaller.
  • Clear “leave no trace” guidance in briefings and notes; in addition, we ask you to stay on marked trails and protect stone heritage.
  • Refill, don’t buy: tap water is excellent in Portugal; as a result, we recommend a reusable bottle over single-use plastic.
  • Smarter logistics: when transport is needed, we group luggage moves and use local taxis; consequently, extra kilometres and emissions drop.
  • Digital-first info: app + GPX + concise notes reduce printing; paper copies are available on request.
  • Greener routes: vineyard walks in the Douro, mountain paths in Peneda-Gerês and coastal boardwalks in Minho—meanwhile, transfers are kept to essentials.
  • Travel choices: we advise train options (e.g., Porto ↔ Douro/Viana) where feasible; furthermore, we share tips for low-impact returns.

Community

  • Local stays, real impact: family-run hotels and country cottages; moreover, breakfasts often feature regional produce.
  • Eat regional: we highlight small restaurants and tasquinhas—for example, Douro olive-oil “meat cake”, Gerês lamb/Cachena and Atlantic seafood.
  • Fair partnerships: we pay suppliers promptly and plan off-peak where possible; in return, they deliver consistent quality and service.
  • Village economies: route notes point to cafés, bakeries and markets in Castro Laboreiro, Lindoso, Caminha and Viana; therefore, spend stays local.
  • Wine culture, first-hand: optional visits to quintas in the Douro—consequently, you meet producers and understand small-scale viticulture.
  • Fishing heritage: on the Minho coast, you’ll see nets, boats and markets; meanwhile, our tips favour family-run spots for the catch of the day.
  • Real help, nearby: our team is based in Northern Portugal and knows these stages intimately; as a result, support is fast and personal (24/7).
