Our bikes

With our local knowledge, we can handpick the best bike for your cycling holiday

We’ve been helping people discover Northern Portugal on self-guided walking and cycling holidays since 2012. We know and love the area well, which means we can create routes taking you to all the best parts. We’ve chosen our range of bikes for their reliability and handling in the places you’ll visit.

Why choose us for your cycling holiday?

Our self-guided cycling holidays will take you to some of our favourite parts of Northern Portugal. We look for the quietest roads and show you the hidden gems. We personally test every route, using the best bikes for the terrain. That means you can relax, enjoy the views, soak up the history, and sample delicious food. We’ll also take care of your overnight luggage, so you don’t have to.

Not sure which cycling holiday to pick? No worries! Our team of friendly experts will help you choose the perfect one. They’ve cycled the routes so can take you through the difficulty, gradient, ascent, distance, and terrain.

On the first day of your cycling adventure, we’ll deliver your bike to your accommodation. A member of our team will make sure everything is set up perfectly for you. We’ll also provide each group with a first aid kit, puncture repair kit, and mini tool. Plus, you’ll have access to our 24/7 English-speaking helpline, just in case.

All our cycling holidays come with a GPS navigation system. This will give you turn-by-turn directions and alerts if you go off-route. But we also give you a printed roadbook with detailed route notes, so you’ll always have a back-up option.

About our bikes

Because we’ve ridden the routes ourselves, we can select the best bikes for each of our cycling holidays. Each bike has a full service between trips, replacing any parts as needed. Plus, we always ensure the brake pads are changed, delivering the bike as new to our guests.

All our bikes are high-quality Trek bikes, chosen for reliability and performance. We have different sizes and use the Trek size guide [add link to PDF] to pick the best one for you. When you book a cycling holiday with us, we’ll ask for your height so we can reserve your bike.

We also have some e-bikes in our fleet, which can help give you a boost on the hills. Some of our cycling holidays always include an e-bike because of the terrain. We design these tours to make sure there’s at least 25% battery left by the end of the day. For other holidays, we offer e-bikes as an optional upgrade.

MTB: Trek Marlin 6

This 29-inch hardtail mountain bike (27.5-inch for smaller sizes) is the standard bike for most of our cycling holidays. The geometry and front suspension make it a comfortable ride and it’s perfect for off-road trails. The medium width tyres roll well on asphalt, gravel, and cobbles.

Electric hybrid bike: Trek Allant+ 7 Lowstep

This 27.5-inch electric bike was named the Dutch e-bike of the year in 2020. Its faster-rolling tyres, more upright design, and front suspension make it comfortable on smooth surfaces. It’s perfect for longer distances on roads, and the electric motor means you can still enjoy the ride when the hills get steeper.

Frequently asked questions about our bikes

Do you provide helmets?

Yes, our helmets are fully adjustable to fit your head.

Do I need to bring a water bottle for my cycling holiday?

No, we’ll provide you with a brand new Portugal Green Walks water bottle on your first day, which will fit into a bottle cage on your bike.

Will I need a rucksack to carry my personal items each day?

No, we provide a rear pannier bag and a handlebar bag. Both are easily removed if you want to take them with you when leaving your bike. We take care of your overnight luggage, transferring it to your next overnight stop.

Do I need to bring a bike lock so I can have a break during the day and leave my bike?

No, we provide a lock with each bike. We ask you to use it whenever leaving your bike, even for short periods of time.

Which side are the bike brakes?

The rear brake is on the right, and the front brake on the left. It’s a standard set up in European countries that drive on the right side of the road and makes it safer when turning across traffic. If you’re used to cycling with brakes on the opposite side, we ask you to take extra care before braking.

Do your bikes come with flat or clipless pedals?

All our bikes have flat pedals. If you prefer to ride clipless, please bring your own shoes and pedals. We’ll swap them over for you on the first day.

Do you have a bike small enough / big enough for my height?

Our bike fleet includes bikes in every size for each type. When you book a self-guided cycling holiday with us, we’ll ask for your height so we can reserve a bike in your size. We use the manufacturers recommended size chart to pick the best bike.

Will I need to take my bike into my hotel room overnight?

No, our accommodation providers will provide a secure place for you to leave your bike overnight.

What happens if I have a problem with my bike?

Because our cycling holidays are self-guided, you’ll need to know how to fix flat tyres and handle minor bike repairs yourself. We provide chain links, spare inner tubes, and a repair kit, so minor problems can be fixed straight away. If you have a more serious problem, our 24/7 English-speaking helpline can arrange for someone to help.
