Savour delicious food and wine

Douro Valley wineries offer a journey into tradition, where centuries-old vineyards and expert craftsmanship produce some of the world’s most celebrated wines.

Food in the Douro is traditional and delicious, often made with fresh local ingredients. Look out for cured meats, bola de Lamego (a meat bread from Lamego), and pastel de nata (Portugal’s famous custard tart). While many dishes include meat or fish, there are also vegan-friendly places, especially in Pinhão and Régua.

As you cycle around the Douro Valley, you’ll have lots of chances to taste local wines and visit vineyards. We also include two visits to local Quintas during the trip. Near Alijó, you can learn about moscatel wine. It’s a fortified wine, but not called port because the grapes aren’t grown close enough to the Douro River. At the end of the week, you’ll visit a vineyard in Régua, this time to taste port wine.

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Douro region

Self-guided cycling tour in the Douro Valley - Bike

Traditional villages in the Douro Valley capture the essence of Portuguese heritage, with charming stone houses, cobbled streets, and a timeless way of life nestled amidst the vineyards.

Truly getting to know somewhere is one of the best parts about a slow adventure by bike. Riding through peaceful villages, you’ll hear cheerful ‘bom dia’ greetings from locals going about their day. It adds to the charm and is something you can’t get when travelling by car. We also handpick accommodation where we know hosts will give a warm welcome and share their love for the area.

Throughout the year, the Douro region celebrates traditional festivals. These include colourful parades, local music, and bustling farmers’ markets. The grape harvest takes place between September and October, depending on the conditions. The Armamar Apple Festival is at a similar time of year, celebrating the apple harvest.

In Favaios, you can explore a museum dedicated to the local history of moscatel wine and the unique regional four-cornered bread. The tourist town of Peso da Régua has the Douro Museum, housed in a former wine warehouse on the banks of the Douro. Here, you can learn more about the fascinating history of port and its significance to the region.

The best time of year to cycle in the Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is beautiful any time of the year. But summer temperatures can be high, making cycling and exploring uncomfortable.

Spring (March to June) brings milder temperatures and stunning scenery. Visit in early spring for the almond, cherry, and apple blossom and later to see the cherry harvest.

Autumn (September to November) sees cooler temperatures after the summer heat. It’s grape harvest season too, where you can see the ‘rogas’ carrying baskets of grapes on their backs. By late October, the vineyards turn shades of red, brown, and orange. This beautiful autumn palette makes it a favourite time for many.

Our Douro Valley e-bike cycling trip runs from April to June, and then from September to November.
