But knowing what to pack can make all the difference to your holiday. We’ve put together our ultimate guide to packing for a cycling holiday in Northern Portugal.

What Portugal Green Walks provides on a self-guided cycling tour

One of the perks of booking with us is having less to worry about. You get the flexibility to ride and explore at your own pace, but with the backup of our team. We book all your accommodation, provide the best bike for your trip, and give you a GPS route to follow.

Luggage
We transfer your overnight luggage between accommodation, so you only need to carry what you want for the day. You’ll have a pannier bag on the bike, but you may wish to bring a small rucksack for sightseeing. Your overnight bag can be up to 20kg (44lbs).

Essential bike kit
You’ll have all the main essentials for cycling, so you won’t need to pack extra kit. We provide:

  • Bike, helmet, and bike lock
  • Water bottle (brand new and reusable)
  • Adjustable handlebar mount for smartphones to use GPS
  • Pannier and handlebar bags for daily essentials
  • Essential repair kit, including puncture repairs and chain link, and oil
  • First aid kit

Packing for a self-guided cycling tour in Northern Portugal

We know it can be tricky to know exactly what to pack, especially if you’ve not visited a place before. Our cycling holiday packing list comes from years of experience biking in the places our tours go.

Every trip is different, so think about where you’ll be visiting. Are you spending more time in the countryside, or do you need city clothing as well?

It’s important to pack for the weather too. You may be lucky and only need sun hats and sun lotion, but a wet weather layer can stop a rainy day from being miserable. You’ll also want extra clothing for sightseeing or evenings out after a day on the bike.

On the bike kit

Layering is the best way to say warm or cool. Depending on the conditions, you can take layers off or add them.

Fast drying clothing is a great idea as you can wash it at your hotel to dry overnight. It will also help wick sweat away from your body, keeping you more comfortable in the saddle. Avoid cotton while cycling though – it holds water, preventing sweat wicking and making it poor insulation when wet.

Top tip: Brighter colours or reflective clothing make it easier for drivers to see you when cycling on roads.

Here are our recommendations for days on the bike:

  • Padded shorts (x2 pairs): Essential for long days in the saddle and to help prevent chafing – we recommend testing them out before travelling
  • Shorts or longer trousers (x2 pairs): This is baggier clothing to go over padded shorts if you’re worried about feeling cold, or prefer to wear both
  • Cycling tops (x2 minimum): Quick drying tops that wick moisture away
  • Extra layers: Breathable tops with long sleeves for cool mornings or rainy days
  • Neck gaiter / buff: Great for warmth, sweat control, or even to use as a hair tie
  • Waterproof jacket: Lightweight, windproof, and packable
  • Cycling gloves: Either long or fingerless, gloves help keep hands comfortable and can prevent blisters (especially if you’re prone to sweaty hands)
  • Cycling shoes: Closed toes and stiff soles are best, plus you may want to carry a lightweight pair of shoes for sightseeing during the day
  • Underwear: Lightweight / breathable underwear (and a sports bra for women), will help prevent chafing
  • Socks (x2 pairs minimum): Quick drying to keep feet comfortable
  • Cycling glasses: Glasses with a good UV filter will help protect your eyes from glare, dust, and pollen
  • Sun protection: A hat, sunscreen, and lip balm are useful for breaks and keeping sunburn at bay
  • Small waterproof bag: Great for keeping essentials together in pannier bags

If you don’t have cycling specific clothing, other comfortable clothing is fine, especially on easier trips. However, we still recommend packing lightweight layers that are breathable and moisture wicking to keep you more comfortable.

Travel essentials

You’ll need to think about packing the following items before travelling:

  • Passport – and visa, if needed
  • Wallet and ID – for example, driving licence
  • Credit and debit cards – plus some Euros for immediate use
  • Travel documents – including airline tickets, tour itinerary, email confirmation, and travel insurance documents
  • Health insurance card – for example, EIHC or GIHC
  • Electronic device charging – including charging leads, plugs, travel adaptors, and portable battery
  • Camera – for capturing the stunning Portuguese landscapes
  • Essential medication – including any prescription drugs

Off-the-bike clothing

After a day on the bike, you’ll appreciate having some comfortable clothing for relaxing in:

  • Casual tops / shirts
  • Trousers / jeans
  • Clothing for evenings out
  • Jumper or jacket
  • Shorts
  • Socks and underwear
  • Pyjamas
  • Swimming togs
  • Shoes or sandals

Toiletries and first aid

Remember to pack the basics, plus a few extras to keep you feeling fresh and comfortable on your holiday:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and shower gel
  • Shaving kit
  • Deodorant
  • Contact lenses and fluid
  • Makeup
  • Hairbrush
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Insect repellent
  • Chamois cream or salve
  • Hydration tablets
  • Personal medical kit – paracetamol, antihistamine, antiseptic cream

Packing tips

Double check the weather before you begin packing, then again right before you leave. It may have changed!

Packing cubes or stuff sacks are great for keeping your luggage organised. They can also help to separate clean and dirty clothing.

Pack the most frequently used items on top, and roll clothing to minimise creasing. You can also stuff hollow items like shoes with socks and electrical chargers so there’s no wasted space.

Top tip: You may wish to bring home souvenirs or local gifts, so leave a little space in your bag!

Before you leave

Knowing you’ve checked these items before leaving home will give you peace of mind while away:

  • Charge any electronic devices you’re travelling with
  • Water the plants
  • Clear the fridge of perishables
  • Empty the bins
  • Unplug electronic devices
  • Copy important documents to digital for easy access
  • Let your bank know your travel plans to avoid any card issues
  • Lock windows and set security devices
