Get to Know the Camino de Santiago by Bike
While the ancient pilgrimage trails through Portugal and Galicia to Santiago de Compostela were developed by hikers, the good news for those who enjoy cycling is that it’s also possible to cycle the Camino.
Whether you choose to follow the Coastal Camino or the Portuguese Way, you can be sure of stunning scenery and delicious food along your journey!
What’s different for bikers on the Camino?
If you want to qualify for the Pilgrim Certificate, you’ll need to cycle at least the last 200 km to Santiago de Compostela, instead of the 100 km required for those on foot.
Just remember to stamp your pilgrim passport (credential) regularly along the way to prove that you have travelled the distance.
Our detailed route notes recommend some deviations from the walking route so that you can enjoy a more leisurely ride. The terrain varies from urban roads, quiet country lanes, and level cycle paths to uneven dirt and stone tracks and granite pavements.
You’ll be riding the Camino without a guide, so you’ll need to know how to carry out some basic tasks, such as inflating the tyres and changing gears.
We only use new, high-quality mountain bikes or e-bikes, so there shouldn’t be any mechanical problems.
