Cyclist riding along a scenic trail in the Peneda-Gerês and Xurés cross-border biosphere reserve

Pedal across Portugal and Spain on a self-guided bike tour through the Gerês-Xurés Cross-Border Biosphere Reserve

What makes this self-guided cycling holiday in Portugal and Spain’s wild north so unique?

If you’re looking for a self-guided bike tour in Portugal and Spain that’s a little off the beaten track, we’ve just launched something really special.

Our new cycling adventure winds through the Peneda-Gerês National Park in northern Portugal and Spain’s Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés Natural Park. Starting in Ponte de Lima and finishing in Valença, this route combines peaceful roads and hidden villages with traditional mountain life.

This trip is the ultimate cycling holiday in beautiful and mountainous regions of northern Portugal and Spain. Passing through Lobios, Castro Laboreiro, and the scenic Minho Valley, it’s a week-long escape into a region that few travellers get to experience.

Why you’ll love this trip in northern Portugal and Galicia

  • Cross-border cycling, riding between Portugal and Spain throughout the week
  • Peaceful roads with very little traffic, perfect for relaxed cycling
  • Traditional villages like Puxedo, Porqueiros, and Castro Laboreiro
  • Stunning mountain scenery and wide open valleys
  • Local food and wine, from Alvarinho wine to hearty stews and cured meats
  • Overnight stay and the opportunity to relax in the Lobios thermal pools

This is a trip for people who love slow travel, fresh air, and discovering places away from the usual tourist trail.

Two countries, one unforgettable journey

Our new trip explores the Gerês-Xurés Cross-Border Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO designated landscape that spans the mountains of northern Portugal and northwestern Spain.

On the one side, you have Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park. On the other, Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés, a rugged Spanish natural park. Together they form a protected region rich in biodiversity and traditional rural life.

We’ve written about community life in Peneda-Gerês before, and this trip lets you experience it for yourself.

The beauty of a self-guided cycling tour like this is the freedom it offers. Ride at your own pace, stop for photos, explore ancient ruins or local cafes, and soak in the views without rushing or following a group.

Five highlights from this cross-border cycling adventure

You can read a day by day breakdown about the trip on our page: Gerês-Xurés cross-border Biosphere Reserve cycling trip between Portugal and Spain. But we wanted to share a glimpse here so you can see some of the experiences that make this cycling holiday in Portugal and Spain so special:

1. Discover Roman roads and ancient wolf traps

Cycle along the Geira Roman Road (also known as the Via Nova, Roman Road XVIII), used 2,000 years ago by legions marching between Braga and Astorga. During the week, you’ll also pass by megalithic tombs and the remains of ancient wolf traps, reminders of the region’s historic past.

2. Soak in natural thermal springs in Lobios, Spain

After a day’s riding through the Peneda-Gerês, you’ll cross the Spanish border and descend into Lobios. Here, you can relax your tired legs in natural hot springs, either outdoors or in the hotel spa. It’s one of the most relaxing overnight stays on the route.

3. Cross the border, twice in one day

The route naturally weaves across the Portuguese and Spanish border. On a circular loop from the tiny village of Porqueiros, you’ll cross it twice within 15 minutes. With each crossing, the clocks shift an hour. It’s a quirky feature of the ride. For more on this cross-border region, see our blog on Galicia’s ‘no borders’ identity.

4. Climb to nearly 1,000m

Castro Laboreiro in the Peneda-Gerês sits at nearly 1,000 metres elevation. It’s the highpoint of the trip and the climb there is steady and scenic, with incredible views. In the village, the local museum has exhibits on the traditional way of life including a reconstructed house. Or you can visit the ruins of a medieval castle, for even more panoramic views.

5. Finish on the Ecopista do Minho

The final leg of the route takes you along the traffic-free Ecopista do Minho. It leads you straight to Valença, a fortified town with traditional textile shops and views across the River Minho to Spain. You can also cross over the International Bridge to Tui in Spain for a celebratory tapas meal. Read our blog post about why you should visit Valença and Tui.

Explore a quieter side of Portugal and Spain

While the Algarve and the Douro may get more attention, northern Portugal is something of a hidden gem – but those who visit rarely forget it. With its green hills, granite villages, and rural way of life, it’s a region shaped by nature and tradition.

Cross the border into Galicia, and you’ll find much of the same. The pace of life is slow and there’s a deep-rooted culture to the region, that feels almost forgotten by time.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park are at the heart of this cycling adventure. It blends all the best bits of a self-guided bike tour in Portugal, with the thrill of exploring a different country just over the hill.

This is a part of the world where you can truly slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.

Who is this cross-border cycling tour for?

This is the perfect self-guided cycling tour for riders who love mountains, nature, and culture. This isn’t a tour packed with tourist hotspots.
